January Meeting Affirms Plans for Two Museum
Rooms, Targets Memorial Day
At its January meeting, the Society capped three months
of planning by targeting the Memorial Day open house for the first permanent
displays in the Fairwater museum.
Affirming their earlier decision to use the former
primary division classroom for reception and meeting space and for an
historical and genealogy research library, members also approved the
creation of displays devoted to area veterans, families, and churches.
The focal point of the room will be a conversation area with early twentieth
century parlor furnishings.
Members also gave final approval to the plan to use
of the former intermediate division room for a permanent display of
desks, textbooks, and other items characteristic of rural Wisconsin
public schools. The room will allow the Society to preserve a sense
of the teaching styles unique to classrooms with multiple grade levels.
Complementing the classroom display will be a permanent exhibit highlighting
childhood activities in the Fairwater area over the last century and
a half.
Februarys meeting will begin to focus on the
details of the initial exhibits and will let the Society develop a formal
needs list.
Society Creating Committee to Locate, Recommend
Photos for Preservation
Faced with a choice among photographs of the
1860s Eggleston-Beilke farmhouse, the William Loechelt blacksmith shop
on the 1880s Washington Street, the 1917 crew of the Fairwater Hemp
Company, and Zion Lutherans 1930 confirmation class, which would
you save? That will be the challenge for a committee the Society will
create this month.
The Society has received a Wisconsin Historical
Society grant to make archival negatives of fifty historical photographs
not in the Fairwater collection. Considering how to proceed with the
grant at its January meeting, the Society approved the appointment of
a selection committee to assess the current collection and develop preservation
priorities for photographs that have been shared with the Society but
not donated.
The committee also will be asked to develop
a list of people and significant buildings for which no photographs
have been located. Among the examples suggested during the January meeting
are pictures of the 1919 Laper dance pavilion, the 1880s Fairwater school,
and the 1860s Jacob Carter farm.
The Society is hoping to have a display of its
final selections ready for Fairwater Heritage Days at the end of July
and is considering the publication of a project booklet featuring the
photos and accompanying historical descriptions.
Members interested in volunteering for the committee
should contact Bob Schuster (608-221-1421) by February 16.

For the Record
Electrical work in the Fairwater museum was completed
January 16 following the Boards approval of a revised estimate
by Ness Electric. The new estimate included unanticipated work mandated
by code to raise the buildings power line above windows at the
front of the building.

Postcard of the A. J. Van Doven house in Fairwater recently
donated by Bob and Kathy Schuster. The Society is seeking assistance
in identifying the location. |
One of the museums three new furnaces is now
operational. The remaining furnaces will be heating the former classrooms
the first week of February following installation of a new electrical
circuitry in the old boiler room. Blair Heating reported that the removal
of the old furnace proved to be a major effort. Blair had to break the
units cast iron frame into several pieces to fit it through the
fire door. How it was installed originally remains a mystery.
The Society will hold its annual meeting on March
2. Those attending will elect Board members to fill the expiring terms
of Cirena Lenz and Bill Loechelt.
Eugene Cluppert and Bob Schuster will evaluate the
former school piano for possible display in the museum. Stored in a
Washington Street basement, it has had water damage and will be examined
to determine whether it can be refinished.
Lois and Harlan Schmuhl have donated a focal piece--a
1920s era carpet--for the former primary division room.
Maurice Kimble, one of the Societys original
members, passed away in January.
Reminder: Membership Renewals Due
Annual memberships in the Society are renewed each
January 1. If you havent already renewed yours, please do. Mailing
and printing costs led the Board of Directors in January to discontinue
newsletter mailings to non-members and non-donors. The new policy will
be effective with the March issue.
