[PROSECUTION OF
LIQUOR SELLERS] We didn't intend to say anything in reference to the matter of prosecuting those who are suspected of selling liquor though regarding the whole traffic as one of the most destructive to the best interests of society, and against which community has the undisputed right to protect itself. There is policy as well as tactics in war, and it is better not to begin a fight unless you have a good chance for a victory. A suit against a person for selling nothing more than beer, will certainly be carried to the circuit court, and it is our conviction that no such suit can be sustained in Fond du Lac county, while the present Judge and Sheriff are in office and the only way to succeeed in such a case is to carry it to the Supreme Court. However, if the people here are of our mind they would get a clear case, and then push it through to the court of final resort, but to commence a suit in Justice court, and then abandon it, without going any farther would not mend matters, but only make them worse. It would probably cost several hundred dollars to carry a case through, but we think it would be money well spent. |
