[M. SHORT ELECTED SEALER OF WEIGHTS AND MEASURES]
Brandon Times, April 5, 1872

We have got it, and we are satisfied. We want nothing more. We have been elected Sealer of Weights and Measures for the Town of Metomen, by a magnificent majority of one. Our opponent gave us a close run, but we were one too many for him, and got two votes to his one, which was ample for all practical purposes. We intend to supply our office with a bran-new outfit, consisting of a new pint cup, a spring balance, and a four foot lath, (the former Rob. Jenkinson is making for us, the balance we have, and the lath we can borrow from the lumber yard) and then we are going for all the weights and measures in this town, and affix to each of them a big chunk of sealing wax, sygnifying [sic] that the owner has paid the necessary tribute to support the dignity of this office. While we can but rejoice that we were successful, we do rather pity Butts, because we know how bad he wanted that office, in fact he hankered after it about as much as we did, but he was too modest to vote for himself or it would have been a tie.
