FAIRWATER HAS BAD FIRE FRIDAY
Blacksmith Shop and Two Residences Burn to the Ground.

Markesan Herald, March 24, 1922

Last Friday morning at two o'clock the people of this village were awakened by the alarm of fire. The blacksmith shop and residence of Owen Riant and also the home of Mr. Berg were completely destroyed within an hour. The fire originated in the blacksmith shop and was uncontrolable for some time. A call was made to the fire departments of Ripon, Markesan and Brandon, but on account of the bad conditions of the roads, their service could not be obtained. The courage and bravery of the men of this village prevented the fire from spreading farther. Some of the house hold [sic] goods from each of the residences was saved. The estimated loss on the Riant residence was $3,000, covered by insurance, but his loss on blacksmithshop [sic] and tools is said to be about $6,000 with no insurance. The loss of the Berg property is estimated at about $3,000 with $1800 insurance.
