FAIRWATER HAS FLOOD
Brandon Times, ca. 1912-1917

Our neighboring village has been the scene of great activity along certain lines during the past week. On the complaint of A. H. Zechieh, an officer of the Wis. Anti-Saloon League, Sheriff Seeve went over to Fairwater Wed. and seized five slot machines, together with a quantity of liquors, and arrested Charles Hins, Aug. Henker, Wm. Block and Mrs. Wm. Daehn for having the slot machines in their possession. Mr. Henker was charged with having operated a "blind pig" and the goods were found in his cellar to prove the claim. He was refused a license, as his establishment is less than the distance required by law from the school house. A special session of the court was held and Charles Hins, Wm. Block and Mrs. Daehn paid fines and costs amounting to $16.37 each, and Aug. Henker, who was charged with operating slot machines and selling liquor without a license paid a fine of $60.68. Upon order of the court the Sheriff burned the slot machines that night, and the next day a deputy came over and spilled about $1000 worth of whiskey and wines. The liquor was taken from the establishment belonging to Mr. Henker, and eleven barrels of whisky, one dozen casks of wine, and bottles filled with "eye openers" and "night caps" were drained on the ground.
