|1847 TERRITORIAL CENSUS
Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin
|The 1847 Wisconsin territorial census recorded
heads of household, number of males, number of females, and total individuals in the
household on December 1, 1847. The census taker in Forest Township was E. R. Chase,
although Fond du Lac County census results were returned to the Secretary of the Territory
by S. S. N. Fuller, who signed as census taker. For the town of Forest, totals of 165
males and 146 females were submitted to the Secretary. The numbers are written on the
bottom of page 60 of the Fond du Lac census and repeated on Fuller's summary sheet, so
presumably they represent his calculations. However, the actual sums of pages 59 and 60
are 164 and 146 respectively. There also appear to be numerous errors, including no
numeric entries for H. Bailley (p. 60).
Microfilm of the original records is available at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin library (Call No. 1847-1). As illustrated, the records were hand written and in many cases are open to interpretation. An attempt is made to record entries as written, even when an entry is apparently in error. In cases where names are exceptionally difficult to read, an (?) marker is inserted. Entries are offered in the order in which they were recorded, because the census-taking sequence provides clues about where individuals actually lived (for an illustration, see Fairwater 1853).
