THE 1847 TERRITORIAL CENSUS
TOWN OF METOMEN
Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin
The 1847 Wisconsin territorial census recorded heads of household, number of males, number of females, and total individuals in the household on December 1, 1847. The census taker was Morgan L. Noble, although Fond du Lac County census results were returned to the Secretary of the Territory by S. S. N. Fuller, who signed as census taker. For the town of Metomen in Fond du Lac County, 274 males and 186 females were identified, for a total population of 460. These records were originally compiled in 1979 by Jean R. Rentmeister in "Wisconsin Territorial Census for Fond du Lac County, 1838, 1842, and 1847," available in the Historical Society Library pamphlet collection in Madison (Call No. 82-2397). Microfilm of the original records is also available at the Historical Society library (Call No. 1847-1).
As illustrated, the records were hand written and in many cases are open to interpretation. The following table offers a fresh reading from the microfilm records at the State Historical Society library in Madison and notes comparisons to the Rentmeister compilation. An attempt is made to record entries as written, even when an entry is apparently in error. In cases where names are exceptionally difficult to read, graphics of the original entry are included. Likely names based on other records for the town are included where there are probable candidates..
Entries are offered in the order in which they were recorded, because the census-taking sequence provides clues about where individuals actually lived (for an illustration, see Fairwater, 1853). In general, it appears that the census taker for 1847 began in the vicinity of Brandon (then Bungtown), traveled west to Fairwater, trended north and east from there, and concluded in the Reeds Corners area.
