1885 WISCONSIN CENSUS FOR METOMEN
Introduction

The 1885 Wisconsin State Census for the Town of Metomen was conducted and completed by Charles Herrmann, Metomen Town Clerk, on June 20, 1885. Herrmann reported 1359 total residents in the township, 704 males and 655 females. Herrman's census also reports a separate subtotal of 130 (68 males and 62 females) for the village of Fairwater, presumably reflecting the fact that the village had its own post office separate from the rest of the township. The total reported by Herrmann was 540 less than the 1899 residents reported in the federal census of 1870. In the intervening 15 years, therefore, the township lost nearly 29% of its population.

Continuing the trends reported in the 1870 census, however, was the increase in Wisconsin-born and in German-born residents. Thirty-seven percent of the 1870 population (696) were born in the state, while the percentage in 1885 was nearly 64% (865). German-born residents in 1870 comprised 15% (281) of the total, 27% (367) in 1885. Bearing out reports in 1883 by both the Brandon Times and the Green Lake County Democrat  that the cars on the new Brandon-Markesan Railroad  were periodically filled with German emmigrants, 8% (21 of 254) families in 1885 were entirely composed of German-born residents. Less than 50% of Metomen families (107) had no German-born members.

Also continuing the earlier trends, those born in the British Isles declined from nearly 8% in 1870 to less than 5% in 1885, those born in Canada from 4% to slightly more than 1%. Dutch-born residents in 1885 equalled those born in the British Isles (36 versus 37 respectively), more than doubling those born in Canada (17) and tripling those born in Scandinavia (12).
