BIG FIRE AT
ALLENTON, WIS.
VILLAGE NEARLY DESTROYED LAST SATURDAY AFTERNOON
The little village of Allenton,
sixteen miles southwest of this village, was visited by a disastrous fire last Saturday,
June 25, and in less than three hours about one hundred and fifty thousand dollars
of property was laid in ashes.
Just how the fire started is not known and will perhaps remain a mystery
forever. Shortly before noon fire was discovered on the northwest corner of the roof of J.
Ruplinger and Co.'s store and the alarm was at once given.
The heat of the past few weeks had made everything as dry as tinder and the
flames spread with lightning like rapidity. From Ruplinger's store the flames leaped to
Kirsch's harness shop and then to Dufferin's hotel, across the street and ignited the
handsome new residence of J. G. Mueller; Peter Van Beek's dwelling house and blacksmith
shop, Mike Schmitt's saloon, Weinand and Gebhardt's meat market the two residence of Mrs.
Anna Kirsch the Allenton Bank and Post Office building, Wm. Zimmel's hotel and Endlich's
hardware store and machine shed, Kreilkanmp's Central Hotel and dance hall, and the John
A. Christnacht residence were laid in ashes.
By the most heroic efforts the residece of Dr. H. H. Albers and the garage of
the Allenton Auto Company were saved.
Altho the people of Allenton are hot hard by the conflagration they are
bearing up under their loss and are going right to work to rebuild. Temporary shacks are
being erected and as soon as the debris can be cleared away and the insurance adjusted,
the work of rebuilding will be started.
