SUMMONED TO THE GREAT BEYOND
EDEN MAN DIES AT ALEXION BROTHER'S HOSPITAL IN
OSHKOSH
John M. Burnell, for many years one of
Eden's most prominent men, died Wednesday evening, January 26th, at 8 o'clock at the
Alexian Bros. hospital at Oshkosh, after an illness of about eighteen months duration.
Mr. Burnell's parents were pioneers of the county, and came to Eden from
Empire forty-nine years ago. His father, the late John Burnell, was widely known, not only
in the vicinity of his home but in all parts of the county.
Mr. Burnell was born at Eden forty-five years ago. While a very young man and
while employed as motorman at Milwaukee, he lost an arm, subsequently being physically
incapacitated for active work, he embarked in the saloon and butcher business at Eden,
building up a fine trade and winning a high reputation for honesty and fair dealings.
Surviving Mr. Burnell in addition to his mother, are three brothers, Thomas,
James and Frank and two sisters, the Misses Jane and Margaret.
The funeral was held at 9:45 o'clock Saturday morning from the family
residence in Eden, and at 10 o'clock from St. Mary's church. The Rev. Father McFarland
officiated, with interment in the St. Mary's cemetery.
The pallbearers were Dr. J. E. McCarthy, James and John Wheaton, John
O'Brien, Leo Flynn and Andrew Dillon. The funeral was largely attended and the floral
offering was exceptionally large and beautiful.
