FIRE DESTROYS
OLD EDEN HOTEL
Fire partially destroyed the property known
as the old Botzen Hotel at Eden early last Thursday morning, the work of the Eden fire
department saving part of the building and also the adjoining buildings.
The building was occupied by John Richardson, as a residence, and
by J. F. Grahl, who used part of it as a storeroom. The fire started about 4 o'clock, when
members of the Richardson family heard the cracking of the flames in the woodshed, back of
their sleeping room.
The fire department was called and did splendid work, saving
about half the building, most of the furniture belonging to the Richardson family and some
of the stock stored in Grahl's storeroom. The upright part of the building is left
standing, but the roof is badly burned. It is estimated that the loss will amount to about
$4,000.
Eden residents gave the highest praise to the members of their
fire department for their good work, especially to Reuben Sloloff and Lawrence McEnroe,
who scaled the ladders and worked on the roof.
The building which was burned Thursday is the property of the
Bechrud Brewing company, of Fond du Lac. It was built in 1872 and was first known as the
Golzen hotel. It was later occupied by James Dillon and then by M. F. Smith, now residing
in Fond du Lac. |
