[FOUR FURLONG GENERATIONS]
When county surveyor Geo. W.
Marshall went out to make a survey in section 3, Town of Auburn, to establish a fence line
for Lewis Furlong, he discovered a most unusual four generation case.
Four generations are not so extremely rare in the county, but in this case
the four are all males and all living under the same roof.
Also the three men are all married, their wives are all living, and the three
couples with the baby member of the four generation quartette are all living together.
James Furlong was born in Massachusetts 77 years ago, but has lived at his
present home continuously since he was 12 years of age. He was married July 3, 1862, to
Mary Ann Hodge of Wyoming County, New York.
Lewis Franklin Furlong is 51 years of age, and was married on his 22nd
birthday to Phoebe Rickaby of the Town of Eaton, Manitowoc county, on August 2, 1891.
James Willard Furlong is 25 years of age, and was married on June 28, 1919,
to Esther Lade of Campbellsport. Their son, Melvin Ardell Furlong, was born February 7,
1920, and at the time the above photograph was taken was 5 months and 2 weeks old.
The three younger members of the four generations have lived all their lives
where they now are.
Another peculiar coincidence is that the elder couple were both born in the
same year, James Furlong being born Oct. 1, and his wife, Aug. 21, 1843.
In this respect "like father like son" holds good for Lewis Furlong
was born Aug. 2, 1869 and his wife was born Jan 27 of the same year. |
