GERMANS LOSE THEIR PAPERS
FOURTEEN RESIDENTS OF THIS COUNTY AFFECTED BY
RULING OF FEDERAL COURT
German residents of Wisconsin who were
granted citizenship after war was declared by the United States, against the imperial
government of Germany, must forfeit their naturalization papers, according to a ruling
made by Judge Geiger in the federal district court at Milwaukee Thursday.
The ruling was the outcome of the three test cases brought against Henry
Grahl of Eden and residents of Waukesha and Winnebago counties by federal agents and which
were tried before Judge Geiger. Thirteen residents of this county besides Mr. Grahl are
affected by this ruling.
Attorney W. W. Hughes of Fond du Lac, who appeared for Mr. Grahl and the
other German residents, stated that the cases would be appealed to the court of appeals at
Chicago.
The fourteen residents of the county involved in the ruling of Judge Geiger
made application for their citizenship papers prior to the declaration of war against
Germany. However, their papers were not granted by Judge C. A. Fowler of Fond du Lac after
the war was declared.
